YES Students Raise $183 for American Cancer Society

6th grade students participating in SRSLY’s Youth Empowerment Solutions (YES) program raised $183 for the American Cancer Society at an event they organized on May 31. The event, “Cardio Against Cancer,” brought together youth and adults to walk, bike, and run from Heritage to the Jr/Sr High School. Registration fees and additional donations totaled $183 raised.

“Cardio Against Cancer” was an idea the YES students came up with as they wanted to support local families who have a loved one with cancer. The students did all of the project planning, including developing all of the event details, designing marketing pieces, and talking to community leaders to get permission and support to hold the event. Great job to the youth, and thank you to everyone who attended the event!

About Youth Empowerment Solutions

The Youth Empowerment Solutions program (or “YES”) is designed to help students develop the knowledge and skills they need to plan and lead community change projects here in Stockbridge.

The YES Program was developed by the Prevention Research Center of Michigan, at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. The SRSLY Coalition is implementing the YES Program in Stockbridge in order to empower young people and create positive community change.

The free program consists of in-school trainings and additional team meetings as needed. The in-school trainings cover teamwork, leadership, and project planning. The YES program also includes a community asset visit, a discussion with community leaders, and a “windsshielding” activity, during which youth learn how to identify community assets and liabilities.
